Stoczek Klasztorny
Historical Towns and Villages
This small village east of Lidzbark Warmiński is the centre of pilgrimages to Our Lady of Peace.
It is also known as the place where Stefan Wyszyński was interned – the cardinal was held in Stoczek from 12th October 1953 to 6th October 1954 during a period of intensified of conflict between the Polish People’s Republic authorities and the Catholic Church.
The Baroque Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a rotunda-shaped chancel, which forms part of the Shrine, was constructed as a votive offering for the peace treaty signed in 1635 between Poland and Sweden in the village of Sztumska Wieś. In 1987, the church was raised to the status of a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II.
