“In Szczebrzeszyn a beetle buzzes in the reeds and that’s what Szczebrzeszyn is famous for...” (J. Brzechwa). Is the town of Szczebrzeszyn really known only for this famous tongue-twister? A trip around the town and its surrounding area will give you more knowledge about the land that is owned by a musical insect according to Brzechwa’s poem. The trip starts on the market square of Szczebrzeszyn, in the middle of which there is a monument of the famous beetle from Jan Brzechwa’s poem. Near the market square there are temples of three faiths that testify to the multicultural heritage of the town: Baroque churches of St. Catherine and St. Nicholas, a historic Orthodox church, and a synagogue that has been restored in the last few years. Close to the town, you can also see a Jewish cemetery with 16th-century tombs. Past Szczebrzeszyn, the trail leads down the cycling path, crosses the Wieprz river and turns left onto the road reaching the Green Velo trail in Brody Małe, sticking continuously to the marked trail. Then it passes the Michałów village and leads down the winding road among ravines to Nielisz, where the biggest water reservoir in the Lublin region is located. Near its eastern shore there is a beach with a bathing area and a wide range of attractions for water sports lovers. The next section leads among large fields to the Sąsiadka village, where one of the more important medieval Cherven Cities was located, and then to Mokrelipie. It is worth stopping here to visit an open-air beekeeping museum. In the distance, you can see the Baroque Bernardine monastery on Łysa Mountain in Radecznica. This place is called “Częstochowa of the Lublin region” and serves as an important pilgrimage centre. The next section of the trail runs on the Czarna Perła cycling trail through the Szczebrzeszyn Landscape Park, passes the open-air museum in Zaburze and leads towards the Zaburze Mound situated on a high elevation. The peak of the elevation is an attractive viewing point, with a convenient picnic area located nearby. The last fragment of the trail leads through diverse lands among meadows, forests, and fields to Szczebrzeszyn. It is a pleasant, almost 5 km long section leading downwards, so it requires little effort.

Trail option (30 km):

The trail around the reservoir in Nielisz bypasses Radecznica. It leads down the Green Velo trail towards the Staw Ujazdowski village and then through the centre of Nielisz and Michałów, from where it returns to Szczebrzeszyn on the Green Velo trail.

  • Szczebrzeszyn – 0 km
  • Michałów – 13 km
  • Reservoir in Nielisz – 19 km
  • Mokrelipie – 5 km
  • Radecznica – 39 km
  • Szczebrzeszyn – 54 km

Surface and marking of the trail:

For the most part, the trail runs along local asphalt roads, and a section of around 10 km runs along unsurfaced roads, including 3 km heading up the steep mountain through a sandy ravine. The trail leads partly along the Green Velo trail and the Central Cycling Trail of Roztocze. The section from the Rozłopy village to Szczebrzeszyn runs mostly along the Czarna Perła cycling trail.
